This scarf is a great hit with the men in my life. Even Dad, who is normally above wearing a scarf will pull this one on in the depths of a Wisconsin winter. 

Make it out of a utilitarian Cascade 220 or Paton's or for something really special, use a cashmere blend.  Look for a yarn with great stitch definition so that the cables are visible. 

The borders could be left off and a slip stitch used at the beginning of each row to give the scarf a more sculptural look.
